Synopsis[]
It's Frank and Marie's 40th wedding anniversary, and Ray, Robert and Debra decide to throw them a surprise party.
Ray and Debra take them to brunch that morning and then get home to see the surprise for them at home. But before they walk into the house, Frank mentions that one year, he and Marie were separated.
During the party, away from the guests, Frank and Marie tell Ray and Debra about the separation. As it turns out, Frank had asked for salt, and Marie got angry and said her food didn't need salt. They had a fight and Frank left. But when little Raymond fell off his bike and broke his arm, Frank started coming by to check on him. And everything worked out from there.
Later, Ray is worried that he and Debra will turn out to be just like his parents. But after seeing Frank and Marie happy the way they are, Ray isn't quite so worried.
Running Gags[]
- This is the first episode to really explore the dysfunctional marriage between Frank and Marie.
- This is one of the episodes that has Robert making odd groaning noises when he is put on the spot and has to make a speech.
- This episode also has Uncle Mel making it quite clear that he's not gay.
- Debra also calls Ray an "idiot", which she does quite often throughout the series.
Trivia[]
- In an episode in Season 9, "Tasteless Frank", Frank wants to salt Marie's food and she says to him that he has never asked for salt. But, in this episode, we see that Frank did in fact ask for salt at one point in their marriage.
- Lee, Stan, Kevin, Andy, Albert, and Lucy were all mentioned in the episode, but none of them appeared in it. But Shamsky, Robert's dog, was seen in the episode.
Production Notes[]
- Re-Recording Mixer Anthony Constantini went back to being incorrectly credited as Anthony Costantini in original airings, while today's reruns retain the correct credit.
Quotes[]
- FRANK: (to Marie) The next time you want to dance, give me notice so I can kill myself.
