Episode Information[]

Summary[]

Robert is ecstatic when he is recommended for an FBI job. That is, until it becomes apparent that Marie's intrusive ways may be his undoing. This time, she may have gone too far and Robert may not be able to forgive and forget.

Plot synopsis[]

Robert stops by Ray and Debra’s house to share some exciting news—he’s landed an interview with the FBI. While Ray and Debra are excited for him, Marie, as expected, disapproves. Despite her objections, Robert asks her to make him breakfast and iron his lucky suit for the interview. However, Marie’s overbearing nature gets the best of her when she “accidentally” burns a spot on the suit. Rushed for time, Robert changes into a regular suit and heads off to his interview with Special Agent Tom Garfield.

Just as the interview is about to begin, Agent Garfield receives a fax—sent by none other than Marie. The letter apologizes for the burned suit and urges Garfield to give Robert the job. Humiliated and enraged, Robert leaves the interview and rushes back to Ray and Debra’s, where Marie is waiting. He bursts through the door, furious, and confronts her about ruining his lucky suit and, worse, meddling with his chances by faxing the FBI. He tells her this was the final straw and demands that she stay out of his life.

Guilty and worried, Marie decides to visit Agent Garfield to try and fix things. She explains that ruining Robert’s suit was an accident, but Garfield senses there’s more to her behavior and asks if something deeper is troubling her. On the verge of tears, Marie confesses that she’s always worried about Robert working in a dangerous profession, and hates the idea of him moving from one dangerous job to another when he's on the verge of being able to retire. She reveals her fear for his safety, but also admits that it’s not her place to dictate his choices. She then pleads with Garfield to reconsider giving Robert the job. Garfield replies that Robert won't be getting the job, but through no fault of Marie as there were better qualified candidates. Marie snaps, giving him a piece of her mind. She insists that Robert is “too good for the FBI” anyway and storms off in a huff.

Later, at Robert’s apartment, Marie shows up to apologize for her behavior. She claims that after their heated exchange, she took a drive to reflect and realized she had overstepped. Robert, not falling for it, reveals that Agent Garfield already called and told him everything. Marie tries to deny it, but Robert cuts her off, telling her that he understands her concerns about his safety and appreciates her care, even though it’s misguided. Marie, defeated, admits she can’t help herself, and Robert, now calmer, thanks her for her concern. He walks her out before heading to work.
