Synopsis[]
Ray still has doubts that Debra actually wants to marry him. The two are meeting Father Hubley to discuss the wedding, and Hubley asks the two why they want to marry the other. Although Debra talks at length about the many reasons she loves Ray, he still thinks she's making it up. When it's Ray's turn, he flounders for a while before simply saying she's "great". The discussion moves onto children, causing an argument between them, so Hubley cuts the meeting short but tells Ray he needs to be really sure he wants to get married before going through with it. Ray admits to Debra his belief she's just using him for a wedding but she thinks he's just using this as an excuse and is instead scared of having to move away from his mom and be a grown up. Ray is still convinced of this own theory.
The big day arrives, and Ray is still unconvinced Debra really wants to marry him. In the church's back room, Ray tries to get his nerves under control when Marie arrives to try and make him feel better, but only ends up crying herself. Frank also arrives to tell Ray he doesn't like Debra's dad, and gets into a squabble with Marie who leaves telling Frank not to sit next to her. Frank then gives Ray a bottle of whiskey to take the edge off his nerves before leaving. Robert then arrives wanting to practice his best man's speech, and is followed by Warren and Lois who give Ray a pair of socks from Debra. Father Hubley tells them the ceremony starts in ten minutes. Robert leaves to get in his place, leaving Ray alone with the socks and the whiskey. Ray picks up the bottle and looks it over.
The ceremony begins, however Ray isn't there when the bridesmaids walk down the aisle. Suddenly Ray appears with a huge smile on his face and greeting everyone, inordinately happy. When Debra walks in wearing her dress, Ray is overcome with how beautiful she looks and runs up the aisle to tell her and walk her down the aisle himself while talking about how great he feels. As they walk Debra gets concerned with how Ray is acting and asks if he's ok, but he insists it's just because he's so in love with her. The wedding begins, and Father Hubley tells everyone that while he wasn't sure at first if Ray really wanted to get married, he can now see that Ray has fully allowed the spirit of the occasion to take over. Ray then decides to recite his own vow and apologises for being a jerk and promises to try and be less of one with Debra's help. The two are then married, although Ray lays a huge kiss on her before being told.
At the reception, Frank approaches Ray and Debra at their table and his comments makes Debra realise he gave Ray some alcohol before the wedding. Debra gets upset, thinking Ray had to get drunk in order to get married. Ray insists he didn't and shows her the bottle Frank gave him; it is still sealed. Ray tells her it was the socks that helped him, as he considered how funny it was that Debra would send them and this finally made him realise how lucky he was and allowed the happiness to take over. Debra is overjoyed, although Ray warns not to expect him stay as happy in future. The two return for Robert's best man speech, where after mentioning that he's now more certain than ever Ray will always get what he wants he still wishes them well, which reduces Marie to tears. He then leads the toast to the married couple.
Later, Ray and Debra share their first dance full of happiness. Back in the present, the two share another dance in the bedroom still as in love as ever. Debra asks how Ray could ever think she didn't want to marry him, and Ray jokes he's still not fully convinced. Debra asks what it'll take, as it's reveal their three kids have joined them.
Running Gags[]
- Robert's "crazy chin" habit makes a prominent appearance in the episode. At the end of his toast to Ray and Debra, he touches the glass to his chin, then takes a drink. So, everyone at the wedding reception does the same.
- As with all of Uncle Mel's appearances, he (or his friend) mention that they are not gay.
Trivia[]
- This is the first multi-part episode in the series. The second would be Italy: Part 1 and Part 2. The third is the big fight between Debra and Marie that carries over from Season 6 to Season 7, spanning 4 episodes: Mother's Day, The Bigger Person, The First Time, and The Cult.
- Actor Ray Romano's real-life daughter Alexandra Romano makes an uncredited cameo appearance as the Flower Girl. And Ray's real-life father Albert Romano plays the part of Lewis.
- Albert Romano is better known for playing the role of Frank's friend Albert, but here, before the character Albert was created, he played Lewis.
Production Notes[]
- This is the last episode to feature the silent Worldwide Pants logo, in a rare appearance of the Worldwide Pants/HBO Independent Productions order at the end of the season. The HBO logo remains silent.
Quotes[]
- Lewis: "We're not gay."
